4 Tax Tips for Freelancers and Small Businesses

  1. The ‘zelfstandigenaftrek’
    Roughly translated as self-employment deduction. This means that you can deduct a steady amount from your taxes because you are self-employed (2017: € 7,280).
    Keep in mind, you have to be able to proof you are an entrepreneur. Also you can not reach the ages of 65 in this year and you have to meet the ‘hour-criterion’ (2017: 1225 hours a year spent for your company)
  2. The ‘startersaftrek’
    Again, rougly translated as startersdeduction (2017: € 2.123). This is an additional deduction to the one above. You have to meet above requirements plus this should be your first company in the last 5 years and last 2 years you did not use the self-employment deduction as mentioned above.
  3. The ‘KOR’ arrangement
    Is your yearly payable amount of VAT below € 1883,- then you might be eglible for the above mentioned KOR arrangement. This means that in some cases you are exempted from VAT. Still you have to meet some requirements. If you want to know more, let us know and we can help you.
  4. ‘Investeringsaftrek’
    Translated as invesment allowance or investment incentives. Whenever you invest as a freelancer or small business, chances are there is a possibility for a tax deduction. However, the arrangement can be quite complicated and a lot depends on the type of investment and the amount of investment.

Through the above arrangements there are some attractive tax benefits to be gained. However, each arrangments has it’s own rules and exceptions, so it is important to investigate which benefits you are entitled to.
